The Woman in Black

The Woman in Black- Daniel Danger

The Woman in Black is the haunting story of a lawyer who travels to a village where he finds a bitter ghost is haunting the locals.

The colour Daniel has used in his image is very fitting as the blue creates a sinister atmosphere and a chilling feeling. I think it is appealing that he has used silhouettes to highlight the ghosts- it creates a feeling of ambiguity and no emotion. 

The central focus of the image is the front door of the house and the main character; they are highlighted by the light and also by the detail shown on the house. This detail allows a kind of depth of field where the characters in the foreground are shown out of focus and the background is shown in focus and very detailed.  The perspective is interesting as it gives an outsiders view as if we are watching the turn of events, which is accurate as we are the audience for the film. 

The central location of the house and the character suggests that they are the key elements in the film and also that it is quite enclosed- it has the feeling of being trapped. I think that this poster may be more understandable after you have seen the film as you realise who the surrounding people are.  

I think that Daniel has used the faded text to make the image itself more prominent rather than the name of the film; the image explains the film. It is also quite a ghostly looking font, which fits in well with the theme of this film. 

I think the poster is very effective as it is clear in showing what the film is about and the atmosphere is creates.

Olly Moss and Saul Bass

These are both examples of posters that Olly Moss created as part of a series of advertisement posters for upcoming shows.

I think an interesting feature of these posters is that they all use the same group of colours and are all created using simple silhouette vector styles. They look like they have been printed rather than made digitally which creates an appealing effect. Removing some of the detail from the images allows the audience to use their imagination to make the posters more captivating. 

This style is very popular among other designers too for example Saul Bass who has previously made posters for films such as West Side Story and The Birds. His work often incorporates the main themes from the film to create inspiring and creative designs to appeal to the audience. I really enjoy this style of design as it is simplistic, logical and is easy on the eye. The colours used are contrasting and symbolic- the red colour represents danger whereas the white represents innocence . This could indicate that there is to be conflict involved in the plot line and it suggests that horror is the genre of the film.
